Why Should I Use Tallow on My Face?

Rendering tallow

Why is tallow good for your skin?

We know it as the original skincare ingredient. You may know it as beef suet. Tallow is a reliable skincare ingredient that:

  • Serves as a skin superfood, giving your skin the essential fat-soluble vitamins it needs to restore and maintain balance.
  • Contains the closest fatty acid profile to our own skin and oil, allowing it to be absorbed quickly and easily.
  • Is an age-old, tried and tested skincare solution, used well before today’s chemical-laden, petroleum- and water-based products.
  • Is stable and does not oxidize or go rancid easily, like other plant-based products that also may damage skin cells.
  • Contains essential acids that help maintain microbial balance.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it absorbs whatever you put on it. It’s as important to have animal fats in your skincare as it is in your diet!

Is it Important to have Grass-fed tallow?

Wilde Flora tallow whips and balms are made from grass-fed cows, which gives it unique health properties for the skin, such as its higher nutrient content, including Omega 3 fatty acids.

Does tallow smell bad? How do you render tallow?

Our gentle, careful rendering process helps to keep the scent of our tallow whips and balms as mild as possible. When rendered correctly, tallow has an almost sweet scent.

Tallow can be smelly if:

  • It is rendered at too high of a temperature
  • It is rendered with meat or blood still present in it
  • It is rendered for too long
  • It is rendered from trim fat instead of KPH fat
  • It is frozen/thawed/refrozen too many times
  • It is processed/cured a certain way

Also, smell can vary depending on the animal and its diet. All these factors are hard to control completely, so getting a consistent result is difficult.

We start by using unprocessed fat and render it down slowly, over 8-12 hours to separate out the liquid tallow oils. We separate our rendered tallow into grades, and only use "Grade A" for our face whips.

Does tallow really work?

Tallow is an incredibly effective, non-greasy moisturizer. It also is nutrient dense and helpful for a lot of skin issues.

Legally, we can not claim to treat, diagnose or prevent any diseases, but if you read our testimonials, you can hear what other users have to say.

Is tallow greasy?

A little tallow goes a long way. Depending on your unique skin type, you may need more or less. It is best used in the morning and evening as a moisturizer after cleansing and toning the face. If you use the correct amount, it will not feel greasy and should absorb completely into the skin.
